Habit Is Stronger Than Reason - George Santayana. 

The Gemara described a structure called an Achsadra, which in Greek is an Exedra (usually in the Gemara a chaf-samach combination is actually a Greek Chi. This structure consists of a Roof and at least some open walls, if not all four walls open, depending on the case discussed.

In terms of Derash there is a Gemara in Menachos 29b that describes the world as a giant achsadra:

ומפני מה נברא העולם הזה בה"י מפני שדומה לאכסדרה שכל הרוצה לצאת יצא ומ"ט תליא כרעיה דאי הדר בתשובה מעיילי ליה

And for what reason was this world created specifically with the letter heh? It is because the letter heh, which is open on its bottom, has a similar appearance to a portico, which is open on one side. And it alludes to this world, where anyone who wishes to leave may leave, i.e., every person has the ability to choose to do evil. And what is the reason that the left leg of the letter heh is suspended, i.e., is not joined to the roof of the letter? It is because if one repents, he is brought back in through the opening at the top.

וליעייל בהך לא מסתייעא מילתא כדריש לקיש דאמר ריש לקיש מאי דכתיב (משלי ג, לד) אם ללצים הוא יליץ ולענוים יתן חן בא לטהר מסייעין אותו בא לטמא פותחין לו ומ"ט אית ליה תאגא אמר הקב"ה אם חוזר [בו] אני קושר לו קשר

The Gemara asks: But why not let him enter through that same way that he left? The Gemara answers: That would not be effective, since one requires assistance from Heaven in order to repent, in accordance with the statement of Reish Lakish. As Reish Lakish says: What is the meaning of that which is written: “If it concerns the scorners, He scorns them, but to the humble He gives grace” (Proverbs 3:34)? Concerning one who comes in order to become pure, he is assisted from Heaven, as it is written: “But to the humble He gives grace.” Concerning one who comes to become impure, he is provided with an opening to do so. The Gemara asks: And what is the reason that the letter heh has a crown on its roof? The Gemara answers: The Holy One, Blessed be He, says: If a sinner returns, repenting for his sin, I tie a crown for him from above.

Pesach Eynayim quoting the Tomer Devorah makes important psychological observations about repentance, somewhat different than the Gemara’s interpretation:

מפני מה העה"ז נברא בה' וכו' וליעיילי בהך וכו'. פירש רבינו מהר"ם קורדוביר"ו זצ"ל בספר תומר דבורה דהקב"ה ברא העולם פתוח לצד הרע והחטא לרווחה אין צד שאין בו חומר ויצה"ר ופגם כמו אכסדרה שאינה גדורה בכל הצדדים אלא פרצה פרוצה לצד הרע לצד מטה כל מי שירצה לצאת מעולמו כמה פתחים לו לא יפנה לצד שלא ימצא עון וצד ליכנס לסט"א. ופתוחה מלמעלה שאם ישוב שיקבלוהו. ואמרו בש"ס וליעייליה בהך לא מסתייעא מילתא שהשב לא יספיק לו שיגדר בעון כגדר הצדיק שהצדיק שלא חטא גדר מעט יספיקוהו. אך החוטא צריך לעשות כמה גדרים דבקל יפתהו יצרו ומשו"ה אמרו במקום שבעלי תשובה עומדים אין צדיקים גמורים יכולים לעמוד שבעלי תשובה סגפו עצמן ונבדלו מהחטא יותר מהצדיקים וכו' זהו תורף דבריו בקצור:

ולפי פשוטו אפשר במ"ש חכמי המוסר דהשב לא ילך תכף מהקצה אל הקצה כי לא יוכל לסבול ויפרוק עול ויחזור לסורו וז"ש לא מסתייעא מילתא כלומר לא אפשר לשוב בדרך רחבה ליכנס תכף ברחבי התשובה שמא יכבד עליו ויפרוק עול אי לזאת יכנס במקום צר מעט מעט ויתגדל יום יום בדרכי התשובה בסדר המדרגה:

The reason why the repentance process cannot go through the wide opening, represented in the bottom of the letter “hey” is to hint at the idea that repentance must be slow. Meaning, the return cannot be through the wide opening in the bottom of the letter “hey”, but it must be through the side opening further up which is smaller. If he makes too many and too broad changes to quickly he is apt to fall back down through the same large opening that he came in. On the other hand, if he has to make slower changes, it’ll be more likely that he will be able to maintain them.

It is common that people who want to make changes in habits or lifestyle or personality go for big goals. It is understandable, because it’s hard to feel good about small attainments. However, this often sabotages the efforts because it is difficult to remain motivated over a long period of time without getting some kind of immediate sense of satisfaction. It is like dieting: it is hard to hold back from eating so many different kinds of foods for a payoff that might only come weeks later in terms of losing weight. So, when making a change, define the goals to be attained as much smaller and therefore allow a sense of accomplishment to enter into the picture much sooner.
