You may have sat across from your client as they cried over the loss of their baby. You let them speak about it. You let them cry it out and hopefully help them feel a bit lighter as they leave.

But who is there to support the mother when she gives birth to a stillborn? Or to support the father who is watching his wife go through labor knowing that they won’t be going home with a baby?

This woman is a doula who must play the part of a therapist as she guides parents in supporting each other through this tough time.

She helps parents with decisions such as whether to hold their baby or not. Oftentimes, she is asked to look at the baby first, to tell the parents if the baby is scary-looking or beautiful.

You would think that Aidy Hoffman, doula and midwife-in-training, would talk all about herself and what she does. But nope, in her humble, self-effacing manner, she talks about the inspiration she gains from seeing how couples cope under such painful circumstances.

And she offers valuable insights into what goes on inside those hospital rooms.
