Chairwork Psychotherapy is an experiential therapeutic modality uniquely suited to trauma healing and recovery. The development of a trauma-focused Chairwork model primarily makes use of Trauma-Centered Storytelling and Confrontational Dialogues for interpersonal mistreatment. Trauma-Centered Storytelling is a dialogue form where the patient, seated in a storytelling chair, expresses a trauma-based narrative with the aim of emotional catharsis and emotional integration. With the support and guidance of the therapist, the patient tells the story multiple times in one session. Confrontational Dialogues for interpersonal mistreatment is a dialogue structure where patients engage with and confront abusers via expression of the cycle of emotions, including anger, fear, love, and grief. The most crucial step of this dialogue structure is the opportunity for a redecision; the patient has the choice to make a change in their life and move out of the shadow of the trauma. This proposed online experiential workshop will introduce therapists to the practice of Chairwork and Parts Work via the use of brief lectures, storytelling, and unrehearsed, live clinical demonstrations. Participants will gain knowledge to apply Chairwork and Parts Work when working with trauma, PTSD, and grief.
